Philosophy of the Project Learn School Community
Mission Statement
Project Learn is a school community serving children from kindergarten through eighth grade. Situated in the historic Philadelphia neighborhood of Mt. Airy, the school maximizes the many resources available in a dynamic urban setting.
Project Learn School is committed to providing a rich, nurturing learning environment to students from a wide variety of economic, ethnic and racial backgrounds. The school's curriculum is designed to promote the student's intellectual, social and emotional growth.
Through its cooperative governance structure, Proejct Learn School provides a model for each child to be a thoughtful and active member of the community. Staff, students and parents participate in the ongoing development of a challenging and supportive educational program.
Statement of Vision
1. Project Learn School, as a community of staff, children and parents working together, acknowledges that all must share the responsibility of governing and maintaining the school through town meetings, group meetings, committees and cooperative work. The school is committed to a consensus model for all of its decision making.
2. Project Learn School values the diversity found in our urban neighborhoods and strives to have the school reflect a similarly diverse population. A strong commitment to active community recruitment and cost-efficient operation is made to achieve this goal.
3. Project Learn School acknowledges the need to be an active and inclusive member of the local community. The school continues to serve the community with adult education classes, as a weekend art and a recreational center for neighborhood children and as a meeting place for neighborhood service and civic organizations.
4. Project Learn School will maintain small classes so that dedicated and creative teachers can work with children and their families to set individual learning goals and develop effective strategies for achieving those goals.
5. Project Learn School seeks to provide a nurturing environment in which all children are challenged and their achievements are recognized- Project Learn stresses cooperative learning, play and work as a way to balance individual growth.
